Detail of Memorial Window Dedicated to Ellen Arthur

This photograph of the memorial window dedicated to Ellen Herndon Arthur in the sanctuary of St. John's Church was taken by Bruce White for the White House Historical Association on March 5, 2009. President Chester A. Arthur commissioned the scene, which depicts the Resurrection, in memory of his wife, Ellen, who died before her husband took office. The window is inscribed with the words, "To the glory of God and in memory of Ellen Lewis Herndon Arthur: Entered into life January 19, 1880." At his request it was placed in the south transept of the church, so he could see it from the White House in the evenings.
